DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 212 OF 365
Prophecy That Becomes Practical Care
Read Acts 11The famine prophecy in Antioch leads to a remarkably practical response. Agabus indicates by the Spirit that a great famine is coming, and Luke notes its fulfillment during Claudius’s reign. The disciples do not treat this revelation as material for fascination alone. Each determines to contribute according to available resources, and they send relief to the believers in Judea through Barnabas and Saul. The movement is from the Spirit’s warning to shared responsibility. This growing church, already being taught to remain faithful to the Lord, expresses that faithfulness through material help for others. The chapter gives us reason to welcome genuine prophetic ministry, while its particular emphasis falls on the loving action that follows. For believers today, attentiveness to the Spirit should deepen concern for people’s needs. Here, spiritual responsiveness takes the tangible form of proportionate giving and help actually delivered.
Put the Word into practice
Set aside a specific amount within your means and send it through a trustworthy church relief effort to believers facing food insecurity.
Search the Scripture
What do the disciples’ contributions according to their means, followed by the delivery of relief, reveal about their response to Agabus’s prophecy?
A prayerful response
Holy Spirit, make me attentive and responsive to your work. Keep me from seeking spiritual experiences while neglecting people in need. Give me a generous heart and the resolve to turn concern into help that reaches others.
