DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 211 OF 365
God Has Already Welcomed Them
Read Acts 10Peter’s companions are astonished when the Holy Spirit falls on the Gentiles listening in Cornelius’s house. Their surprise reveals the boundary God is crossing in their understanding. Peter has proclaimed Jesus’ ministry, death, resurrection, and authority, announcing forgiveness through his name to everyone who believes. Before Peter finishes speaking, these hearers receive the Spirit, speak in other languages, and magnify God. Peter recognizes that their reception of the same gift removes any grounds for withholding water baptism. These Jewish believers are learning that Gentiles are not second-class recipients of God’s mercy. The Spirit’s activity here is both genuinely supernatural and deeply concerned with belonging. We can welcome his present gifts while receiving this passage’s unmistakable challenge: our inherited distinctions must not become barriers against people whom God welcomes through Jesus. The proper response is recognition, baptism, and shared fellowship.
Put the Word into practice
Identify a believer from a cultural background you tend to keep at a distance, and invite that person to share a meal as an expression of fellowship in Jesus.
Search the Scripture
Why does the Gentiles’ reception of the Holy Spirit lead Peter to insist that water baptism should not be withheld from them?
A prayerful response
God of every nation, forgive the favoritism I overlook in myself. Thank you for giving your Spirit freely and bringing people to forgiveness through Jesus. Open my heart to your gifts and to the people you welcome.
