DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 209 OF 365
The Gift Cannot Be Bought
Read Acts 8Simon’s offer of money exposes a dangerous misunderstanding of the Holy Spirit. In Samaria, Philip proclaims Jesus, people believe and are baptized, and healings and deliverances bring great joy. When Peter and John pray and lay hands on the believers, they receive the Holy Spirit. Simon sees this and wants the ability to confer the gift himself. Peter’s response moves beneath the transaction to the condition of Simon’s heart: something given by God cannot be purchased as spiritual leverage. The answer is repentance, not a better offer. This passage welcomes the Spirit’s powerful activity while refusing to turn that activity into a possession to acquire or control. For us, the question is not merely whether we desire spiritual power, but why we desire it. God’s generosity calls for humble reception, not an attempt to secure importance through sacred things.
Put the Word into practice
Before you next seek or exercise a spiritual gift, ask God to expose any desire for recognition or control, and explicitly surrender that motive to him.

What does Simon’s request reveal about the difference between receiving God’s gift and wanting control over its distribution?
A prayerful response
Father, thank you that your Spirit is a gift, not something I can purchase or possess for my own importance. Correct my motives. Make me eager for your work and willing to repent wherever pride has shaped my desires.
