DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 207 OF 365

Making Room for Neglected Widows

Read Acts 6

Growth in the Jerusalem church exposes a painful failure: the Hellenist widows are being neglected in the daily distribution. The apostles do not dismiss the complaint as a distraction from spiritual ministry. They gather the disciples and establish responsibility for meeting the need, while preserving their own devotion to prayer and the ministry of the word. Their solution refuses a false choice between teaching and practical care. Both matter enough to require faithful attention. The qualifications for the seven are especially revealing: a good reputation, fullness of the Holy Spirit, and wisdom. Handling resources and protecting vulnerable people require spiritual character, not merely administrative ability. The community participates in selecting these servants, and the apostles commission them with prayer. For churches today, caring about neglected people means more than expressing sympathy. It includes listening, assigning responsibility, and entrusting the work to people whose character makes them worthy of confidence.

Put the Word into practice

Ask a leader in your church’s practical-care ministry which group is being underserved, and offer a specific, sustainable way to help address that gap.

A prayerful response

Lord, make us attentive to people whose needs are being overlooked. Give our church wise, Spirit-filled servants and the humility to receive correction. Help us support both faithful teaching and dependable practical care.
