DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 206 OF 365
Generosity Without a Disguise
Read Acts 5Peter’s questions to Ananias identify the central issue with precision: the property was his, and the proceeds remained under his control. The sin was not failing to surrender every coin. It was presenting a false account of the gift, a deception Sapphira knowingly supported. In this young community, their offering concealed an agreement to lie to the Holy Spirit. Their sudden deaths bring deep fear upon the assembly, exposing the seriousness of treating God as though he could be deceived. This passage does not authorize leaders to demand all a believer’s possessions; Peter explicitly acknowledges the giver’s freedom. It calls us instead to honesty before God and his people. A smaller gift truthfully presented is different from a larger appearance built on deceit. Reverence for the Spirit belongs not only in moments of visible power but also in the ordinary details of money, speech, and what we claim about ourselves.
Put the Word into practice
Review one recent claim you made about your giving or service. If you exaggerated it, correct the account with the person who heard it rather than preserving a false impression.

How does Peter’s acknowledgment that Ananias controlled the property and its proceeds clarify the nature of his sin?
A prayerful response
Holy God, expose the places where I value appearing devoted more than being truthful. Give me courage to correct deception and generosity free from performance. Teach me to honor your Spirit in my words and my handling of money.
