A Prayer Larger Than the Threat

Read Acts 4

After the authorities threaten Peter and John, the believers bring the report into shared prayer. They do not pretend the danger is small. Instead, they begin with the greatness of the God who made everything and acknowledge that opposition to Jesus did not overturn his purposes. From that foundation, they ask for boldness to continue speaking and for God to work healings, signs, and wonders through Jesus’ name. Their request is not for influence over their opponents but for faithfulness in their witness. God answers by filling them with the Holy Spirit, and their speech becomes bold. For this threatened Jerusalem community, dependence on God strengthens obedience rather than replacing it. Their prayer gives believers today a fitting pattern: name the pressure honestly, remember who rules, and ask the Spirit for courage. We can also ask for healing and miracles as part of bearing witness to Jesus, rather than making comfort our highest aim.

Put the Word into practice

With another believer, name a specific pressure that makes you hesitant to speak about Jesus, then pray together for the Spirit’s boldness to remain faithful in that situation.

What do the believers’ requests in Acts 4:29–30 reveal about their priorities after being threatened?

A prayerful response

Sovereign God, you see the pressures that make us afraid. Fill us with your Holy Spirit and give us courage to speak of Jesus. Stretch out your hand in mercy, bringing healing and signs that direct people to him.
