Power for Witness, Not a Timetable

Read Acts 1

The disciples ask about the timing of Israel’s restoration, but Jesus redirects their attention toward the Spirit’s power and their coming witness in Acts 1:6–14. The Father retains authority over times and seasons; the disciples receive a task that reaches from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Their dependence is concrete: Jesus has commanded them to remain in Jerusalem until the promised baptism in the Holy Spirit. Waiting is therefore obedience, not a retreat from mission. After his ascension, they return and persist together in prayer, joined by the women, Mary, and Jesus’ brothers. These first witnesses stand at a particular moment in the unfolding mission, yet their posture challenges the church today. We should seek the Spirit’s empowering presence rather than assume determination is enough. His power serves testimony about Jesus, not our desire to master God’s timetable or make ourselves impressive.

Put the Word into practice

Set aside fifteen minutes to pray with another believer for the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence, naming a specific person or community with whom you hope to share the message of Jesus.

What does the contrast between the disciples’ question and Jesus’ answer reveal about the purpose of the Spirit’s power?

A prayerful response

Father, release me from trying to control your timetable. Holy Spirit, empower us to bear faithful witness to Jesus. Unite us in prayer and give us courage to serve beyond the places and people we already know. Amen.
