DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 201 OF 365

Your Calling Is Not a Comparison

Read John 21

After Jesus speaks about the costly future awaiting Peter, Peter turns toward the beloved disciple and asks about his future. In John 21:18–23, Jesus redirects him from another disciple’s path to his own responsibility to follow. This is not a rejection of concern for others. It is a refusal to let comparison govern obedience. Peter has been entrusted with caring for Jesus’ sheep, and his calling remains real even when another person’s future is undisclosed. John also carefully corrects the rumor that grew from Jesus’ reply: a conditional statement had been turned into a prediction. Together, these details teach attentiveness to what Jesus actually says. We need not fill his silences with speculation or measure our faithfulness against someone else’s circumstances. Following Jesus means receiving the responsibility he has given rather than demanding an explanation of every difference between our path and another’s.

Put the Word into practice

When comparison arises today, name the responsibility it is distracting you from and complete one concrete act of care for someone already entrusted to you.

How does Jesus redirect Peter’s question, and what does John’s correction of the resulting rumor teach about interpreting Jesus’ words?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, forgive my habit of measuring my path against another person’s. Make me attentive to what you have actually said. Give me grace to care faithfully for others and follow you without needing to know their future. Amen.
