Faith Beyond the Demand to See

Read John 20

Thomas makes sight and touch his conditions for believing the disciples’ report in John 20:24–31. When Jesus appears again, he addresses those conditions directly and calls Thomas away from unbelief. Thomas responds by acknowledging Jesus as his Lord and God. Yet Jesus does not make Thomas’s experience the required pattern for everyone who follows. He pronounces blessing upon those who believe without seeing him. John then explains why he has recorded selected signs: readers can believe that Jesus is the Christ, God’s Son, and receive life in his name. The movement is from an eyewitness encounter to trustworthy written testimony. Later readers are not asked to manufacture Thomas’s experience or treat faith as belief without evidence. They are invited to receive the testimony John supplies. Jesus’ patience meets Thomas’s resistance, but it also challenges the insistence that faith must wait until our preferred conditions are satisfied.

Put the Word into practice

Write down one condition you have placed on trusting Jesus. Read John 20:24–31 again and identify what the recorded testimony gives you reason to believe about him.

How does John’s explanation in verses 30–31 help readers who have not received Thomas’s eyewitness experience?

A prayerful response

Risen Jesus, meet me with patience where I struggle to believe. Free me from demanding that you satisfy every condition I set. Help me receive the testimony about you and trust you as my Lord and God. Amen.
