DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 199 OF 365
Care at the Foot of the Cross
Read John 19Amid the cruelty surrounding the cross, John 19:25–27 pauses over a concrete act of care. Jesus sees his mother and the disciple he loves, then entrusts them to one another in a mother-and-son relationship. The disciple responds by receiving her into his home from that hour. Jesus’ suffering does not make the person before him invisible. Nor does his concern remain a tender sentiment: it becomes a responsibility someone accepts. For those standing at the cross, his words establish an immediate household obligation. The passage does not assign every reader that disciple’s particular role, but it reveals a pattern worth following: love notices a person and makes practical provision. We can speak reverently about Jesus’ death while overlooking needs close enough to see. Here, devotion to Jesus takes shape in an opened home and sustained care for someone he loves.
Put the Word into practice
Contact one person facing grief or family strain and offer a specific form of practical care you can sustain, such as a weekly meal or a regular ride.

What does the disciple’s immediate response add to our understanding of the care Jesus arranged for his mother?
A prayerful response
Jesus, thank you for the tenderness you showed even in suffering. Open my eyes to people I have overlooked, and move my concern beyond words into dependable care. Make room in my schedule and habits for love. Amen.
