DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 197 OF 365
Set Apart and Sent
Read John 17Jesus does not ask the Father to remove his disciples from the world that hates them. He asks for their protection from the evil one and their sanctification in truth. These requests belong together: they need to be kept from evil while remaining present among people who do not yet know the Father. Jesus then connects their being set apart with their being sent. Holiness is not withdrawal from every difficult relationship, and mission is not permission to absorb the world’s hostility or falsehood. The Father’s word is the truth that forms them for their calling. Although Jesus speaks here about his first disciples, his prayer later includes those who will believe through their message. We therefore learn to seek a life that is distinct in allegiance yet engaged in loving witness, rather than choosing either isolation or compromise.
Put the Word into practice
Before your next interaction with someone who does not share your faith, pray through John 17:15–18, asking to remain truthful and loving rather than withdrawing or compromising.

How does Jesus’ pairing of sanctification and sending challenge your tendency toward either isolation or compromise?
A prayerful response
Holy Father, shape me by your truth and guard me from evil. Keep me from hiding from people or surrendering my obedience to gain acceptance. Send me into ordinary relationships with a faithful heart and genuine love. Amen.
