DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 196 OF 365
The Spirit Glorifies Jesus
Read John 16Sorrow fills the disciples as Jesus speaks about leaving, yet he tells them that his departure will bring the Counselor’s coming. In verses 12–15, Jesus explains the character of the Spirit’s ministry: he guides into truth, communicates what he receives, and glorifies Jesus. This promise first addresses disciples who cannot yet bear everything Jesus has to tell them. Their limited understanding will not defeat his purpose. For believers today, this gives both confidence in the Spirit’s present activity and a clear direction for discernment. We can welcome his guidance, including prophetic speech, while recognizing that genuine spiritual ministry honors Jesus rather than competing with him. The Spirit is not presented as a source of fascination detached from Christ. His work makes Jesus known and draws attention to what belongs to the Son and the Father.
Put the Word into practice
Before acting on a claimed spiritual impression, examine whether its message agrees with Jesus’ teaching and directs attention toward him rather than the messenger.

What do Jesus’ descriptions in John 16:13–15 teach you to look for when evaluating a claim of spiritual guidance?
A prayerful response
Holy Spirit, guide me into truth and deepen my knowledge of Jesus. Keep me open to your work and discerning about claims made in your name. May what I receive and share honor the Son rather than draw attention to myself. Amen.
