DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 195 OF 365

Fruit Begins with Remaining

Read John 15

A branch cannot manufacture life apart from its vine. Jesus uses that dependence to teach his disciples where lasting fruit comes from. He does not tell them to become impressive through independent effort and then bring their achievements to him. He tells them to remain in him, with his words remaining in them. The Father tends the branches for greater fruitfulness, so even fruitful disciples still need his pruning. Within this chapter, fruitfulness is closely connected with obedience, love for one another, and the Father’s glory. Remaining is therefore neither passive inactivity nor a private spiritual feeling. It is continuing dependence on Jesus that becomes visible in a life shaped by his commands. His warning about withered branches makes this dependence serious; his promise of full joy shows that obedience is not intended to be loveless drudgery.

Put the Word into practice

Read John 15:9–17 slowly, then spend time you would normally protect for yourself meeting a specific need of another believer.

Search the Scripture

According to John 15:7–12, what would distinguish remaining in Jesus from merely having a spiritual feeling?

A prayerful response

Jesus, I cannot produce the life you desire apart from you. Let your words remain in me and reshape my choices. Father, remove what hinders fruitful love, and teach me the joy of depending on your Son. Amen.
