DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 193 OF 365
Authority That Takes Up a Towel
Read John 13John places Jesus’ foot washing beside his knowledge that the Father has entrusted everything to him. His humble action does not come from uncertainty about his identity; it expresses the confidence of knowing where he came from and where he is going. At this supper, the disciples receive service from the very Lord they rightly honor. Peter resists, but Jesus makes clear that receiving his cleansing cannot be replaced by Peter’s preferences. Then Jesus turns the basin into a lesson for the whole group: those who acknowledge his authority must follow his example toward one another. For us, humility is not merely thinking modestly about ourselves. It means allowing Jesus to overturn our assumptions about which tasks are beneath us. Understanding his example matters, but the blessing he describes belongs to putting it into practice.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one necessary, unglamorous task you normally leave to another believer, and do it today as a deliberate response to Jesus’ example.

What task do you consider beneath you, and how does Jesus’ action in John 13:3–17 challenge that judgment?
A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, forgive my desire to be honored while avoiding humble service. Help me receive your cleansing and follow your example with willing hands. Teach me to serve because you are my Lord, not because someone is watching. Amen.
