The Shepherd Who Does Not Flee

Read John 10

Jesus explains his goodness in John 10 through a sharp contrast: the hired hand abandons the flock when danger arrives, while the shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The difference is not skill alone but genuine care. The hired hand protects himself because the sheep do not belong to him. Jesus knows his own and willingly gives himself for them. He also makes clear to his hearers that this death will not be an accident beyond his control; he has authority to lay down his life and take it again, in obedience to his Father. This gives substance to his promise of abundant life. The sheep’s life rests on the Shepherd’s self-giving love, not on a promise of comfortable circumstances. We learn to trust him by attending to who he is: the Shepherd who does not abandon his people when caring becomes costly.

Put the Word into practice

Read John 10:11–18 slowly, then bring one present fear to Jesus in prayer, naming his willing, costly care as your reason for trusting him.

What does Jesus’ willingness to lay down his life reveal about his care that the hired hand’s behavior cannot?

A prayerful response

Good Shepherd, thank you that your care does not disappear when danger comes. Help me trust your love rather than measure your faithfulness by my comfort. Teach me to follow you with confidence in who you are.
