DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 185 OF 365

When Bible Study Resists Its Own Witness

Read John 5

Searching Scripture can coexist with refusing the One to whom it points. Jesus confronts this contradiction among the religious opponents addressing him in John 5. They study the Scriptures with eternal life in view, yet resist coming to him for that life. The problem is not careful reading; Jesus affirms that these writings testify about him. The problem is a refusal to receive their testimony. He also exposes their appetite for approval from one another, showing how the desire for human recognition can obstruct belief. His appeal is searching but merciful: he speaks so that they may be saved. For present readers, biblical knowledge must never become a substitute for trusting Jesus. We should study attentively, but also allow what we read to challenge our loyalties. The Scriptures are not trophies of religious competence; their witness calls us to receive the Son whom the Father sent.

Put the Word into practice

Reread John 5:39–44 and name one way concern for others’ approval is making you resist Jesus. Respond with a specific act of obedience rather than merely recording another insight.

Search the Scripture

How does Jesus connect his opponents’ refusal to come to him with their desire to receive glory from one another?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, keep my study from becoming a hiding place for unbelief. Expose the approval I seek more than yours, and make me willing to receive what your words reveal. I come to you for life; teach me to read with humility and respond with faith. Amen.
