DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 183 OF 365

Joy When Jesus Becomes Greater

Read John 3

John’s disciples see people going to Jesus and bring their concern to their teacher. John answers their anxiety with the picture of a wedding. The bride belongs to the bridegroom; the friend’s place is to rejoice in the bridegroom’s arrival, not compete for his attention. John understands his ministry as something received from heaven, not a possession he must defend. Because he is not the Christ, another person’s growing attention to Jesus does not diminish his calling. It fulfills it. His willingness to become less prominent grows from joy in Jesus, not contempt for himself. For John’s disciples, this means learning that loyalty to their teacher must lead them toward Christ. For us, the same image challenges every attempt to make Christian service revolve around our importance. Faithful ministry welcomes the moment when people depend less on the messenger and look more clearly to the Son.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one ministry or relationship in which you feel overlooked. This week, deliberately encourage someone’s trust in Jesus without drawing attention to your own contribution.

How does John’s picture of the bridegroom and his friend expose the difference between serving Jesus and competing for attention?

A prayerful response

Father, thank you for every opportunity you have given me to serve. Free me from treating your work as my possession. Teach me to rejoice when Jesus receives attention, even when my part becomes less visible. Let my service help others recognize and trust your Son. Amen.
