The Sign Points Beyond the Wine

Read John 2

John identifies the miracle at Cana as a sign that reveals Jesus’ glory and leads his disciples to believe in him. That explanation in John 2:11 tells us how to read the wedding scene. The wine matters, but Jesus himself is the center. His mother brings the shortage to his attention, while his reply makes clear that his timing is not hers to control. The servants then carry out his directions, filling the stone jars and taking what they draw to the ruler of the feast. They know the source of what he tastes, even though he does not. For the disciples present, this unexpected provision becomes a disclosure of Jesus’ glory. We can still bring ordinary needs to him and welcome his miraculous work. But the sign calls us to trust the giver, not to turn his generosity into a formula for obtaining whatever we want.

Put the Word into practice

Bring one ordinary need to Jesus in prayer today, asking him to act while deliberately surrendering your preferred timing and method to him.

How does John’s explanation in John 2:11 shape what you should seek from Jesus when you bring him a need?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, thank you that ordinary needs are not beneath your attention. Help me welcome your power without trying to control you. Let your kindness deepen my trust in who you are, not merely my desire for what you can provide. Amen.
