Greatness at the Serving Table

Read Luke 22

At the table where Jesus explains his coming self-giving, the apostles begin debating their own importance. Luke 22:24–27 places their ambition beside his generosity, exposing how easily disciples can remain close to Jesus while competing for status. Jesus contrasts the rulers of the nations with the pattern he requires among his followers. Their community must not reproduce leadership that dominates others while expecting admiration. Instead, the greater person must accept the lower place, and the leader must serve. Jesus makes himself the decisive example: although he is their Lord, he is among them as a servant. This does not erase responsibility or leadership; it changes how authority is exercised. For believers today, the question is not merely whether we hold influence, but whether people under that influence receive practical care rather than pressure to reinforce our importance.

Put the Word into practice

In one area where you lead at home, church, or work, take responsibility today for a necessary task you would normally leave to someone with less authority.

In Luke 22:24–27, how does Jesus’ place among the disciples challenge the way you currently use influence?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, expose the ambition that hides beneath my desire to lead. Teach me to use responsibility for the good of others, and make me willing to serve when no recognition follows. Amen.
