DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 175 OF 365
Mercy Reaches the Money
Read Luke 19Zacchaeus begins by trying to see Jesus, but the encounter becomes far more than observation. In Luke 19:1–10, Jesus calls him down and announces his intention to stay at his house. Zacchaeus receives him joyfully while the crowd objects to Jesus entering a sinner’s home. Then the focus shifts to possessions and repair: Zacchaeus commits half his goods to the poor and fourfold repayment wherever he has taken money wrongfully. His welcome of Jesus reaches the part of life where greed and harm could otherwise remain concealed. Jesus announces salvation and explains his mission to seek and save the lost. The movement is not from charitable payment to purchased acceptance, but from Jesus’ seeking welcome to a concrete response. For us, repentance must likewise reach beyond regret into generosity and the repair of wrongs we can actually address.
Put the Word into practice
Identify one financial wrong you have committed, calculate what you owe, and begin repayment with an honest acknowledgment to the person affected.
Search the Scripture
How do Zacchaeus’s commitments to the poor and to those he wronged make his joyful reception of Jesus visible?
A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, thank you for seeking people others dismiss. Bring your saving work into my use of money. Give me courage to name wrongdoing, repair what I can, and practice generosity with joy. Amen.
