DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 171 OF 365
Will You Join the Celebration?
Read Luke 15The elder son hears celebration but refuses to enter it. His anger brings the father outside, just as the younger son’s return brought the father running earlier. The father’s compassion reaches both sons, though their resistance takes different forms. The elder son presents years of service as grounds for resentment and distances himself from his brother by speaking of him only as his father’s son. The father answers by affirming the elder son’s place in the household and restoring the family connection he resists. His brother’s return calls for joy because someone lost has been recovered. Jesus tells this story while religious leaders complain about his welcome of sinners, so the elder son’s response presses their complaint into the open. The ending leaves us examining ourselves: will we receive the Father’s generosity toward repentant people, or remain outside because mercy feels unfair?
Put the Word into practice
Choose one person whose repentance or restoration you have resented, and express sincere encouragement rather than rehearsing their past failures.

How does the father’s response to the elder son in Luke 15:28–32 answer the complaint about Jesus at the beginning of the chapter?
A prayerful response
Father, forgive the resentment that can hide beneath my obedience. Help me recognize others as people you love, not competitors for your kindness. Give me an honest joy when someone turns back to you, and draw me into your celebration. Amen.
