DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 169 OF 365
A Woman Worth Releasing
Read Luke 13Eighteen years of suffering stand behind the woman Jesus notices in the synagogue. She cannot straighten herself, but Jesus calls her forward, lays his hands on her, and heals her. Her immediate response is to glorify God. The synagogue ruler sees a violation of the Sabbath schedule; Jesus sees a woman whose release is fitting for that very day. His comparison with watering an ox or donkey exposes the inconsistency of permitting ordinary animal care while objecting to her restoration. By identifying her as a daughter of Abraham, Jesus emphasizes her belonging and dignity before the gathered people. He identifies satanic bondage in her particular case; the passage does not make that a diagnosis for every illness. This encounter invites us to welcome Jesus’ healing power today and to examine whether our religious habits make room for compassionate ministry to suffering people.
Put the Word into practice
With their permission, pray for someone experiencing illness or disability, asking Jesus for healing while treating them with the dignity and attention he showed this woman.

How does Jesus’ comparison between watering an animal and releasing this woman challenge the synagogue ruler’s objection in Luke 13:10–17?
A prayerful response
Compassionate Jesus, help me notice people whose suffering has become familiar to everyone around them. Bring healing by your power, and free my heart from indifference. Let our gatherings make room for prayer, dignity, and joy in what you do. Amen.
