DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 162 OF 365
Mercy Beyond the Exchange
Read Luke 6Jesus exposes the limits of reciprocal love in Luke 6:27–36. Loving those who love us, helping those who repay us, and lending where repayment seems secure may leave our basic loyalties unchanged. Even sinners practice that kind of exchange. Addressing his disciples and those willing to hear, Jesus commands a different pattern: doing good to enemies, blessing those who curse, and praying for those who mistreat them. The reason reaches beyond the enemy’s response. The Most High shows kindness even to unthankful and evil people, and his children are to resemble him. This is not approval of evil; the passage still names evil honestly. It is a refusal to let another person’s hostility determine our character. Our present obedience begins when mercy matters more to us than winning an exchange or receiving equal treatment.
Put the Word into practice
Pray today for one person who has mistreated you, asking God for their good rather than rehearsing retaliation. Name one specific blessing you can sincerely seek for them.

Where are you limiting love to people who will return it, and how does Jesus’ description of the Father challenge that limit?
A prayerful response
Merciful Father, you see the injuries I carry and the resentment I excuse. Shape my response to reflect your kindness. Help me pray sincerely for those who oppose me and refuse the satisfaction of revenge. Amen.
