A Table That Welcomes Repentance
Read Luke 5Levi’s table becomes the setting for a dispute about Jesus’ mission in Luke 5:27–32. Jesus calls a tax collector, and Levi leaves his post to follow him. Then Levi hosts a feast where other tax collectors and many others share the table. The religious critics see the company as a reason for complaint. Jesus explains his presence through the image of a physician: need is a reason to draw near, not a reason to stay away. Yet his welcome has a clear purpose. He calls sinners to repentance, not to remain unchanged. Levi’s own response has already joined hospitality with a decisive change of allegiance. For us, this scene challenges both contempt toward sinful people and a shallow welcome that never acknowledges sin. Following Jesus means making room for people while taking his call to repentance seriously ourselves.
Put the Word into practice
Invite someone you tend to keep at a religious distance to share a meal or conversation. Listen with genuine care, and be willing to speak honestly about your own need to turn toward Jesus.

How do Levi’s departure from the tax office and his gathering of guests together clarify what Jesus’ welcome involves?
A prayerful response
Jesus, forgive my tendency to keep people at a distance while overlooking my own need for you. Give me a welcoming heart and a repentant life. Let my hospitality help others encounter your mercy and your call. Amen.
