Mercy That Leads into Holiness

Read Luke 1

When Zacharias is filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesies, his praise moves from deliverance to the purpose of a delivered life. In Luke 1:67–79, he celebrates God’s faithfulness to Israel and the mercy promised to their ancestors. But freedom is not presented as an opportunity for self-rule. God’s people are delivered so that they may serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness throughout their lives. Zacharias then describes John’s preparing work in terms of salvation through forgiveness of sins. The image of dawn draws these themes together: God’s tender mercy brings light to people in darkness and directs their feet toward peace. This Spirit-inspired prophecy therefore joins comfort with transformation. For us, receiving mercy means more than seeking relief from distress. Forgiveness opens a life of grateful service, and God’s compassion gives direction to the conduct of those he helps.

Put the Word into practice

A prayerful response

Merciful God, thank you for bringing light into darkness. Forgive my sins, loosen fear’s grip on me, and shape my freedom into willing, faithful service before you.
