DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 153 OF 365

Watchfulness Has Work to Do

Read Mark 13

Jesus answers his disciples’ concern about coming events with an image of servants entrusted with a household. In Mark 13:32–37, the master’s absence does not leave them without direction: each has assigned work, and the doorkeeper must remain alert. Their uncertainty concerns the hour of return, not whether their responsibilities matter. Jesus therefore turns attention away from possessing a timetable and toward readiness expressed through prayer and faithful service. The first disciples needed this instruction amid the alarming events he described, and his closing command extends watchfulness to everyone listening. For us, readiness is not anxious fascination with every crisis. It is refusing to let uncertainty become an excuse for spiritual sleep. We cannot control the master’s arrival, but we can attend to what he has entrusted to us. Alert hope keeps praying and keeps serving.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one responsibility toward Jesus that you have neglected, set aside a specific time to attend to it today, and begin that time with prayer for alertness.

In Jesus’ household image, how does giving each servant work challenge the way you understand readiness for his return?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, free me from restless speculation and careless delay. Make me attentive to you, faithful in the work before me, and awake in prayer as I await your coming.
