DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 149 OF 365
Faith That Admits Its Need
Read Mark 9A desperate father brings Jesus both his suffering son and his divided confidence. In Mark 9:17–29, the disciples’ failure has not ended the father’s search for help, but his request reveals uncertainty about Jesus’ ability. Jesus calls him toward faith, and the father responds with an honest appeal for help with his unbelief. He does not conceal his struggle or wait until he feels perfectly certain. Jesus commands the destructive spirit to leave and then raises the boy by the hand. When the disciples later ask about their failure, Jesus directs them to prayer and fasting. They need dependence on God, not confidence in themselves. This encounter encourages us to seek Jesus for deliverance and healing while bringing our weakness honestly. The father’s mixed faith is not presented as a reason to abandon him; Jesus remains the one with authority to act.
Put the Word into practice

How do the father’s honest appeal and Jesus’ private instruction to the disciples challenge the way I approach an overwhelming need?
A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, I bring you the needs I cannot resolve and the doubts I cannot hide. Help me trust your authority and compassion. Teach me prayerful dependence rather than confidence in my own strength.
