DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 148 OF 365
When Confession Meets the Cross
Read Mark 8Peter recognizes Jesus as the Christ, yet immediately resists Jesus’ explanation of what that identity means. In Mark 8:27–38, a true confession stands beside a deeply mistaken expectation. Peter can name Jesus correctly while still trying to redirect him away from suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection. Jesus corrects him before the disciples, then summons the crowd as well: following him requires surrender, not merely admiration. His command to carry a cross makes the cost unmistakable. The life worth keeping is not secured by gaining everything the world offers, but by belonging to Jesus and his Good News. For those first listeners, this challenged any expectation of discipleship without loss. For us, it exposes the temptation to accept Jesus’ title while rejecting his authority over our ambitions. He does not invite us to manage his mission, but to follow him.

Where am I behaving like Peter—confessing Jesus as the Christ while resisting the costly direction he gives?
A prayerful response
Jesus, forgive me for wanting your name without your path. Reorder my ambitions around you and your Good News. Give me courage to obey when faithfulness costs comfort or approval.
