Devotion That Does Not Evade Duty

Read Mark 7

Jesus makes his criticism of human tradition concrete in Mark 7:9–13. The issue is not simply that inherited practices exist, but that a particular practice defeats God's command. He describes someone declaring resources devoted to God and thereby withholding help from a father or mother. The religious designation appears reverent, yet its practical effect is to cancel parental care. Addressing the Pharisees and scribes, Jesus measures their tradition by whether it upholds or nullifies what God has commanded. This gives us a searching test for our own religious habits. An activity does not become faithful merely because it carries spiritual language or receives community approval. If our way of practicing devotion becomes an excuse to neglect an obligation God has clearly named, that practice needs correction. Genuine honor toward God cannot be built on carefully justified dishonor toward parents.

Put the Word into practice

Review one commitment of time or money that you describe as spiritual, and adjust it if it is being used to evade a concrete responsibility to care for a parent.

Search the Scripture

In Jesus' example, how does declaring resources devoted to God become a way of making God's command ineffective?

A prayerful response

Father, expose the excuses I dress in religious language. Help me honor your commands rather than defend convenient habits. Give me wisdom and generosity to meet family responsibilities as an expression of devotion to you.
