DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 146 OF 365

When Approval Becomes a Master

Read Mark 6

Herod's response to John in Mark 6:17–29 shows the distance between appreciating truth and obeying it. He recognizes John as righteous and holy, protects him for a time, and listens gladly. Yet John has confronted his marriage, and Herod has not accepted that correction. At the birthday feast, a reckless promise and the presence of important guests expose where his allegiance lies. Although deeply distressed by the demand for John's death, Herod chooses to preserve his standing before others rather than protect the man he knows is righteous. His sorrow does not prevent his participation in evil. Mark's account warns us against confusing respect for a faithful messenger with repentance before God. We may enjoy challenging teaching and still resist its claim on our choices. The decisive question is whether truth governs us when obedience threatens our reputation.

Put the Word into practice

Name one correction you have resisted because obeying it would be embarrassing, and take a concrete action today to put that correction into practice.

What do Herod's grief and his order to execute John reveal about the difference between feeling convicted and actually repenting?

A prayerful response

God, rescue me from valuing approval above obedience. Forgive me for admiring truth while protecting the choices it exposes. Give me courage to admit wrongdoing and change course, even when others may think less of me.
