Mercy Given a Voice

Read Mark 5

The restored man's request to accompany Jesus in Mark 5:18–20 is understandable: the one who freed him is leaving. Yet Jesus gives him a different assignment. He is to return to his household and friends and describe the Lord's mercy. Earlier, the people had seen him clothed, seated, and clear-minded, but their response was fear and a request that Jesus leave. Into that fearful setting, Jesus sends the man as a witness to what has happened. His testimony does not require an explanation of every mysterious detail surrounding his deliverance. Its center is the mercy he has received. The man obeys and tells throughout Decapolis what Jesus has done. For believers today, this movement connects restoration with mission: receiving help from Jesus is not only a private comfort but also an opportunity to speak truthfully about him among people who know us.

Put the Word into practice

Tell one person who knows you a specific, truthful way Jesus has shown you mercy, keeping the emphasis on him rather than exaggerating your experience.

Why does Jesus' instruction to return home matter when the restored man would rather leave with him?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, thank you for mercy that restores dignity and gives people a place in your work. Help me speak honestly about your kindness. Give me love for the people already near me and courage to make you known among them.
