DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 143 OF 365

When Mercy Exposes the Heart

Read Mark 3

In Mark 3:1–6, the man with the withered hand becomes the center of a confrontation about doing good. Those watching Jesus are looking for grounds to accuse him, not an opportunity to help their neighbor. Jesus brings the man forward and asks whether the Sabbath should be marked by life-giving goodness or harm. Their silence exposes a resistance that argument alone will not soften. Notice that Jesus responds with both anger and grief: hardened hearts are offensive to him, yet deeply sorrowful. He restores the man's hand, while his opponents leave to plan his destruction. That contrast reveals how religious vigilance can become detached from God's compassion. For us, honoring God cannot mean protecting our preferences while overlooking someone's suffering. Jesus' healing also gives us reason to bring bodily needs to him in prayer, trusting his power and compassionate character.

Put the Word into practice

Identify someone whose physical limitation you have overlooked, and offer one practical form of assistance while asking whether they would welcome prayer.

How does the contrast between Jesus restoring the man's hand and his opponents planning his destruction challenge the way you judge religious faithfulness?

A prayerful response

Jesus, forgive me for noticing broken rules more quickly than hurting people. Soften my heart toward those who suffer. Let your compassion shape my actions, and help me pray for healing with confidence in your power and humility before you.
