DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 142 OF 365

The Authority Beneath the Miracle

Read Mark 2

Four people lower a paralyzed man through a roof because the crowded doorway blocks their approach to Jesus. Their determined action is visible, but Jesus first addresses a need the crowd cannot verify by sight: the man’s sins. The scribes recognize the weight of his declaration, reasoning that forgiveness belongs to God. Jesus does not dismiss their concern as unimportant. Instead, he heals the man specifically to demonstrate the Son of Man’s authority on earth to forgive sins. The man’s departure carrying his mat makes that authority publicly evident. The passage joins bodily restoration with forgiveness without saying that this man’s paralysis was caused by a particular sin. For readers today, the miracle directs faith toward Jesus himself, not toward a technique for obtaining results. We may bring physical needs to him with expectancy while also receiving his deeper summons to trust his authority over sin.

Put the Word into practice

Bring one specific sin to Jesus in honest confession today. As you ask for forgiveness, base your confidence on his authority revealed in this passage rather than on whether you feel immediately different.

Search the Scripture

Why does Jesus connect the man’s visible healing to his authority to forgive sins, and which part of that authority do you find harder to trust?

A prayerful response

Jesus, you see needs that others notice and sins that remain hidden. I bring you both without pretending. Forgive me, restore what is broken, and deepen my trust in your authority. Make me a faithful friend who helps others come to you.
