DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 141 OF 365
Compassion That Calls for Obedience
Read Mark 1The man with leprosy approaches Jesus convinced of his ability but uncertain of his willingness. Jesus answers with compassion, a touch, and immediate cleansing. The encounter reveals more than extraordinary power: Jesus attends personally to the suffering person before him. Yet the account does not end with healing. Jesus gives the man a specific instruction to present himself to the priest and offer what Moses commanded as testimony. Instead, the man spreads the news widely, and Jesus can no longer enter a city openly. His excitement does not make his disobedience harmless. For Mark’s readers, compassion and authority belong together in this scene. We may confidently bring bodily suffering to Jesus and ask for healing today, while remembering that receiving mercy does not release us from listening to him. Grateful testimony should serve his purposes rather than replace obedience with our preferred expression of enthusiasm.
Put the Word into practice
Before sharing another person’s healing testimony or prayer request, obtain their permission and honor any limits they set. Let your desire to celebrate Jesus’ compassion remain joined to careful, obedient love.
Search the Scripture
What consequence followed the healed man’s decision to publicize his experience, and how does that challenge your understanding of grateful obedience?
A prayerful response
Compassionate Jesus, I bring you the suffering of those I love and ask for your healing touch. Give me a listening heart as well as an eager voice. Let my gratitude honor your direction and protect the people whose stories I share.
