DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 140 OF 365
A Commission Larger Than Their Confidence
Read Matthew 28On the mountain in Galilee, the risen Jesus meets disciples whose response includes both worship and doubt. Matthew does not present the eleven as a company whose every uncertainty has disappeared. Yet Jesus commissions them, grounding their mission in his authority rather than their emotional certainty. The movement of his instruction matters: they are to make disciples among all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey his commands. This is more than gathering an audience or securing a momentary response. It is the formation of people whose lives increasingly answer to Jesus. The original commission is addressed to the eleven, while its worldwide scope and promise extending to the age’s end give the church its continuing direction. Their confidence rests in the risen Lord who sends them and remains with them.
Put the Word into practice
Arrange one conversation this week with someone who wants to follow Jesus. Read Matthew 28:16–20 together and help that person identify a specific act of obedience to Jesus.

How do Jesus’ authority and continuing presence shape the way you understand his command to make disciples?
A prayerful response
Risen Jesus, turn my attention from my adequacy to your authority. Make me willing to help others follow you, not merely admire you. Teach our church to welcome people from every nation and patiently nurture lives of obedience.
