DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 137 OF 365
Prepared for the Delay
Read Matthew 25All ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13 carry lamps, expect the bridegroom, and eventually fall asleep. Sleep itself does not distinguish the foolish from the wise. The decisive difference is preparation: the wise bring oil in additional vessels, while the foolish do not. When the bridegroom arrives after a delay, readiness cannot be borrowed from someone else or assembled after the moment has passed. Jesus gives this parable to his disciples as a call to watchfulness because they do not know the time of his coming. The chapter does not explicitly identify the oil as the Holy Spirit or any particular spiritual practice; its clear emphasis is preparedness that lasts through waiting. For us, association with expectant believers cannot replace our own response to Jesus. His delay calls for sustained readiness, not confidence that we can attend to him later.
Put the Word into practice
Set aside time today to examine your own response to Jesus, naming and addressing one area where you have postponed obedience while relying on your connection to other believers.

Since all ten virgins slept, what does the extra oil reveal about the kind of readiness Jesus requires?
A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, teach me to remain ready through the waiting. Deliver me from postponing obedience or mistaking the faith of others for my own response to you. Give me steady devotion that does not depend on knowing when you will come.
