DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 135 OF 365
Begin Inside the Cup
Read Matthew 23The cup in Matthew 23:25–28 looks clean where everyone can see it, yet its contents expose a different reality. Speaking against the scribes and Pharisees before the crowds and his disciples, Jesus names extortion and unrighteousness beneath their polished religious appearance. His command to clean the inside first establishes an order: genuine outward holiness must grow from inward repentance. He is not dismissing conduct or suggesting that intentions make harmful actions acceptable. The inside needs cleansing precisely because hidden corruption produces a deceptive exterior. The following image of beautiful tombs containing death makes that contradiction unmistakable. We should receive this teaching as an invitation to honest examination, not as permission to congratulate ourselves for being unlike those leaders. Jesus calls us beyond managing impressions toward integrity, where what people see is no longer a cover for what we refuse to surrender.
Put the Word into practice
Examine one practice that makes you appear generous or upright, identify any selfish gain or dishonesty beneath it, and correct that specific wrong.

What does Jesus’ command to clean the inside first reveal about the difference between genuine holiness and managing my reputation?
A prayerful response
Jesus, I do not want an attractive appearance that conceals unrighteousness. Expose what I have protected from correction. Cleanse my motives and lead me to put right the harm my hidden sin has caused.
