DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 134 OF 365
Love That Orders Everything
Read Matthew 22A lawyer approaches Jesus in Matthew 22:34–40 with a question intended to test him. Jesus answers by joining wholehearted love for God with love for one’s neighbor. The first command claims the heart, soul, and mind; no part of life is placed outside devotion to God. The second directs that devotion toward another person’s good, with the seriousness we ordinarily give our own needs. Jesus does not present love as an alternative to God’s instruction. He explains that the whole law and the prophets depend on these two commands. His answer therefore challenges religious knowledge that never becomes love, while also refusing a version of neighbor-love detached from God. For those hearing him then, and for us now, obedience must be examined not only by what we know, but by whom we love and how fully we love them.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one neighbor whose needs you have overlooked and provide a specific form of help today, treating that person’s need with the attention you would give your own.

How does Jesus’ pairing of these two commands challenge any separation between my devotion to God and my treatment of my neighbor?
A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, bring my heart, soul, and mind into wholehearted love for God. Turn my attention toward the neighbor I have overlooked, and make my obedience caring rather than merely correct.
