DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 131 OF 365
The Possession He Would Not Release
Read Matthew 19The young man approaches Jesus asking about eternal life, but leaves sorrowful when Jesus directs him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow him. His sadness reveals the conflict: he wants life, yet cannot bring himself to release the wealth standing between him and obedience. Jesus’ command addresses this particular man, while his following warning broadens the challenge by describing the difficulty wealth presents to entering God’s Kingdom. The disciples are astonished and ask who can be saved. Jesus locates the possibility in God rather than human ability. This encounter is therefore not a formula for purchasing eternal life through generosity. It exposes the limits of self-confidence and the power of possessions to hold the heart. We should hear both its searching demand and its hope: what we cannot accomplish by our own resources is not beyond God’s power.
Put the Word into practice
Choose one possession you are reluctant to release, sell it, and give the proceeds to someone in need as a deliberate response to Jesus’ call to generosity.
Search the Scripture
What do the young man’s sorrow and Jesus’ answer to the disciples reveal about the limits of wealth and human ability?
A prayerful response
Jesus, uncover whatever I treasure more than obedience to you. Loosen the hold of possessions on my heart, and make me generous toward people in need. I depend on God’s power, not my own goodness, for salvation. Amen.
