When Faith Resists the Cross

Read Matthew 16

Peter’s confession and his rebuke of Jesus stand remarkably close together in Matthew 16. He rightly identifies Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, yet resists Jesus’ announcement of suffering, death, and resurrection. Jesus exposes the difference between recognizing his identity and accepting his way. Peter’s protective words become a stumbling block because they place human preferences above God’s purpose. Jesus then addresses all the disciples: following him requires self-denial and taking up the cross. This is not a command to seek suffering for its own sake, but to surrender the right to make self-preservation our highest good. We can confess Jesus accurately while still resisting an obedience that costs us comfort or approval. The searching issue is whether we will follow the Lord we acknowledge when his direction challenges the life we want to protect.

Put the Word into practice

Identify one act of obedience to Jesus that you have resisted because it could cost you approval or comfort, and carry it out this week.

Search the Scripture

Where might I resemble Peter by acknowledging who Jesus is while rejecting what following him requires?

A prayerful response

Lord Jesus, forgive me for confessing your authority while resisting your direction. Expose the places where self-protection governs my choices, and give me courage to follow you at a real cost. Amen.
