DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 127 OF 365

When Religious Language Hides Neglect

Read Matthew 15

The dispute over handwashing turns when Jesus asks why tradition is being used to disobey God. His concrete example concerns parents who should receive help from their children. A declaration that resources are devoted to God has become a reason to withhold that help. What sounds religious is functioning as an escape from obedience. Addressing the Pharisees and scribes, Jesus exposes the distance between honoring God with speech and honoring him with the heart. He does not condemn devotion to God; he condemns a practice that makes devotion an excuse for neglecting God’s command. For present readers, the passage calls for more than criticizing someone else’s traditions. It asks whether our spiritual explanations conceal an unwillingness to fulfill real obligations. Worship becomes hollow when religious words protect selfish choices. A heart near to God must be willing to let his commands challenge its preferred arrangements.

Put the Word into practice

Examine whether a religious commitment has become an excuse to neglect a genuine need of a parent. If so, arrange one concrete form of appropriate help this week, such as a visit, practical assistance, or financial support.

In Jesus’ example, how does the declaration of a gift devoted to God actually undermine obedience to God?

A prayerful response

Father, do not let my religious words hide a resistant heart. Show me where I have used devotion as an excuse to avoid responsibility. Give me honesty to repent and love that takes practical form.
