DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 122 OF 365

The Spirit in the Hour of Pressure

Read Matthew 10

Jesus does not send the twelve out with a picture of effortless acceptance. In Matthew 10:16–20, he describes vulnerable messengers facing hostile people, councils, and rulers. His command joins wisdom with harmlessness: they must recognize danger without adopting the cruelty around them. Then he addresses a particular fear, the anxiety of having to speak when handed over for his sake. Their Father’s Spirit will help them testify in that hour. This promise is given to disciples under persecution, not as an excuse to neglect preparation whenever anyone speaks publicly. It reveals that opposition cannot exclude God’s presence or prevent faithful witness. Believers today can welcome the Spirit’s active help when allegiance to Jesus brings pressure. We need neither manufacture impressive words nor retaliate against opponents. We can ask for discernment, remain innocent of wrongdoing, and trust God to help us speak faithfully.

Put the Word into practice

Before a conversation in which your allegiance to Jesus may be challenged, ask the Spirit for truthful words and choose one nonretaliatory response to possible hostility.

How do Jesus’ paired commands to be wise and harmless correct the way I respond when someone opposes my faith?

A prayerful response

Father, when fear makes me want to hide or strike back, steady me by your Spirit. Give me discernment without suspicion, courage without aggression, and words that faithfully point to Jesus.
