When Compassion Becomes Prayer

Read Matthew 9

At the close of Matthew 9, Jesus sees more than a large gathering. He sees people who are harassed and scattered, and their condition moves him with compassion. The image of sheep without a shepherd identifies their need for care and direction. Jesus then turns to his disciples with another image: a plentiful harvest with too few laborers. These pictures belong together. People are not merely a crowd to manage or an opportunity to count; their distress calls for compassionate workers. Jesus’ immediate instruction is prayer to the Lord who owns the harvest and sends the laborers. The disciples must begin with dependence rather than assume the mission belongs to them. For us, concern about spiritual need can become more than frustration or commentary. We can ask God to send people whose service reflects the compassion Jesus shows through teaching, proclaiming the Kingdom, and healing.

Put the Word into practice

Choose one community whose spiritual needs concern you and pray today for God to send compassionate gospel workers there.

Search the Scripture

When I notice people who seem harassed and scattered, do I respond with the compassionate prayer Jesus commands or merely with observations about their condition?

A prayerful response

Lord of the harvest, keep me from looking at struggling people with impatience or indifference. Send workers who will teach truth, proclaim your Kingdom, and care tenderly for those in distress. Give me willingness to serve wherever you place me.
