DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 120 OF 365
Authority Beyond the Doorway
Read Matthew 8A suffering servant remains at home while a centurion approaches Jesus in Matthew 8:5–13. The officer does not ask Jesus to admire his rank; he acknowledges his own unworthiness and appeals to Jesus’ authority. Drawing on his experience of giving and receiving orders, he recognizes that Jesus does not need to stand beside the servant to heal him. Jesus commends this faith before those following him, even contrasting it with what he has found in Israel. His words about people arriving from east and west challenge any confidence based merely on inherited belonging. The servant’s healing confirms the authority the centurion trusted. Today, this encounter encourages us to bring others’ suffering to Jesus with humility and confidence in his power. Faith rests in who Jesus is, rather than in physical proximity, impressive status, or a method that makes healing automatic.
Put the Word into practice
Pray specifically for one person who is ill and absent from you, asking Jesus to heal them while entrusting that person to his care.

How does the centurion’s appeal to Jesus’ authority challenge the conditions I think must be present before I can pray confidently for someone?
A prayerful response
Lord Jesus, I bring before you someone whose suffering I cannot remove. You are not limited by the distance that limits me. Please bring healing and relief, and teach me to trust your authority with a humble heart.
