DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 117 OF 365

Leave the Gift and Go

Read Matthew 5

Jesus gives reconciliation startling priority when he describes a worshiper remembering an unresolved grievance at the altar. The offering is already underway, yet the worshiper must interrupt it and seek reconciliation before returning. For the disciples hearing this teaching, devotion to God could not be separated from responsibility toward a brother. This instruction follows Jesus’ warning about anger and contempt, moving righteousness beyond avoiding murder to addressing the relationships our attitudes and words have damaged. Notice that the remembered concern is not merely our anger against someone else, but another person’s grievance against us. Jesus calls us to take initiative rather than wait comfortably for an approach. For us, the application is not to abandon worship, but to stop using worship as shelter from relational responsibility. An apology cannot compel another person’s response, but we can honestly acknowledge our wrong and seek peace.

Put the Word into practice

Contact someone you have wronged and offer a specific apology that names your conduct without excuses or demands for immediate forgiveness.

Why does Jesus tell the worshiper to seek reconciliation before completing the offering, and what unresolved responsibility does that expose in your life?

A prayerful response

Father, show me where I have allowed worship to coexist with unaddressed harm. Give me humility to acknowledge my wrong, courage to begin a difficult conversation, and patience to listen without defending myself.
