DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY · DAY 113 OF 365
The Name Joseph Obeyed
Read Matthew 1Joseph’s obedience becomes visible in the name he gives the child. Before the angel appears, Joseph intends to end the marriage quietly rather than expose Mary publicly. After the dream, he receives her as his wife and names her son Jesus, just as he was commanded. Matthew directs his readers beyond Joseph’s changed plans to the reason for that name: this child will save his people from their sins. The promised rescue reaches deeper than relief from embarrassment, uncertainty, or difficult circumstances. Sin itself is the need Jesus comes to address. The announcement of God’s presence therefore arrives together with the announcement of salvation. For us, welcoming Jesus means more than wanting divine companionship while keeping our lives unchanged. Joseph’s response models a fitting posture toward God’s revealed purpose: receive what God has made known, and let obedience reshape your plans.
Put the Word into practice

How does the angel’s explanation of Jesus’ name challenge what you most want him to rescue you from?
A prayerful response
Jesus, thank you for coming near to save us from sin. Expose what I have excused, and help me receive your mercy with honest repentance. Give me a willing heart when obedience changes my plans.
